At what point should a road be entirely repaved instead of patched over and over again? I was driving on a dusty highway somewhere in the southern California desert and at some point I noticed that the asphalt was covered in cracks. Some were small, but many were rather large, and they had all been filled in with some type of dark-greyish sealant. The sealant was holding the faded asphalt together and the patterns it made looked like interconnected clusters of roots. I drove on this highway for several hours but the sealed cracks didn’t end.
